Photography for Industrial Product Publicity

"A good picture is worth a thousand words" may not be a concept you will get many writers to agree with but if forced to admit the real truth, "The value reflected is extremely high in terms of ultimate acceptance and placement by editorial staffs." A few magazines do not print product photo’s at all with press releases; some print only in black and white, others print in either black and white or color. Product press releases should be accompanied by a photograph, sketch or illustration of some type and the end results you may expect will be strongly influenced by the quality of that accompaniment. We strongly recommend professional photography whenever possible.

 Do’s and don’ts:

Tips for amateur photographers:

Large industrial machines in poorly lit factories are very hard to shoot. If the subject is small enough, bring it outside and shoot it against a clean background. Advanced amateurs may know how to use a higher shutter speed and a larger aperture opening to diminish "depth of field. For small tabletop type shots, it sometimes pays to visit your local art store and look at the graduated color sheets available for backgrounds. We keep several on hand at A.I.M. Associates all the time. These sheets give a nice air brushed background effect at minimum cost. Use a tripod wherever possible. Use the slowest speed film possible for the lighting situation on hand to minimize grain. Larger negative formats can somewhat allow for use of higher speed films under natural lighting conditions and still deliver acceptable grain levels in the final print or transparency.

 Photo Subjects:

It is not possible to photograph your product or service. Baloney! Use your imagination and create something that enhances the story image in the reader’s "minds eye." A.I.M. Associates was recently engaged to promote a Catalog on Diskette about clean rooms for automated powder coat finishing. We were told that no photo’s were available because none of our client’s customers would allow photography of their proprietary manufacturing plant secrets
